El Cid Bowls Club

History

 

The opening of the El Cid Bowls Club was officially announced on Friday July 8th 1988. It was only a five rink bowls green and formed a section of the existing El Cid Sporting Club.

 

The first President was Brian Turner who was the owner of the El Cid.

Other facilities of the Sporting Club included a Swimming Pool and Tennis Court as well as a Restaurant and Bar.

 

The first inaugural meeting was held on 14th July 1988 and it was agreed to form the El Cid Bowls Club. The first meeting of the elected Committee was held on 5th February 1989. At this time the Club had been adopted into the Sporting Club as the "Bowls Section" and the first Constitution and Rules were drawn up. It wasn't until two and a half years later, on 3rd December 1990, that the club was legally formalised. This date was a defining moment in the history of the Club. It was the date when the Club ceased to be a "section" of a Sporting Club and became a legal entity in it's own right. The first Annual General Meeting took place on 22nd January 1991.

 

The El Cid Bowls Club has gone from strength to strength since then and is now recognised along with the other Northern Costa Blanca Clubs like Javea & Benitachell. The Club hosts a lot of friendly games with touring sides from the UK. Also, other sponsored events which are open to all other Clubs.

 

In March 2004 the bowling green carpet was replaced and in 2006 awnings were built at each end of the green so that the bowlers can escape the very hot Spanish sun. In April 2009, the carpet was lifted and the base was completely recovered with a specialised self-leveling compound. The carpet was then re-laid and re-stitched producing a fabulous surface to bowl on.

 

In 2012, following a very successful sponsorship campaign led by Richard Watson, all members of the club received a newly designed, free, club shirt, which is now worn at all club represented bowling events.

 

The club also takes part in the Costa Blanca League Programme with one Winter League team and two teams in the Northern League.
